Chatting Hotel Lux with Myles Dungan

And some upcoming events and links.

Here’s a quick post to share my recent conversation with Myles Dungan on the RTÉ History Show. Thanks to Myles and the production team at Pegasus, Lorcan and Ian, for arranging this and putting it together.

The studio we recorded in is actually the Liveline studio

It is just over a month since Hotel Lux launched. It still amazes me to think that something that began life as a chapter in my PhD thesis is now on bookshelves. And even more amazing: people are reading it. I met a few readers at an event in Dublin Castle yesterday and also one Archive Rats subscriber (hello Sean!)

Before I went into my PhD thesis defence in February 2020 I remember thinking: no matter the outcome of this, I know that I have given May O’Callaghan a life beyond the archive, and that alone vindicates this PhD project for me.

Sharing her story - and the story of the wider book - on national radio was therefore another meaningful moment.

Events

Dublin, Tues 1 October: My talk for the Dublin Festival of History is now sold out. Free events always have a number of no-shows. To be honest, if I were you, I would chance it and come along!

Belfast, Thurs 3 October: If you are around Belfast this week, I will be doing a Q&A about Hotel Lux in Waterstone’s Belfast. The event is also free.

Links

I wrote about Ireland’s history of diversity for The Guardian. I’ve had some lovely messages about this article… and also some absolutely unhinged responses. But hey, that’s what it’s like to be a public historian.

I am keeping the Events page of my website updated. I am hoping some London events may be added soon, so keep an eye on it if you are based in London.

A favour to ask

If you have read and enjoyed Hotel Lux, please do review and/or rate it on the usual online places! It really helps.
